How wide is a double bed?

In the UK, a standard double bed is 4 foot and 6 inches wide, or 135cm. Double bed sheets fit the 135cm width mattress. However in some other European countries, such as Belgium, Greece and Finland, a “double bed” is 160cm wide.

When buying bedding, it’s most important to ensure that the fitted sheet and mattress protectors are the correct size – it matters less if the top flat sheet and duvet are too large.
