How does fire retardant work?

Flame retardant products have been treated with chemicals that prevent the start of a fire; or try to reduce the growth of fire if it cannot be prevented.

There are various ways in which these chemicals try to prevent fires. They may use a cooling process, they may form a protective later or they may use dilution. Fire retardant treatments can be found in powder form, foams, gels, coatings or sprays.
